Kentuck
Presents Best of Show award winner yvonne Wells
NORTHPORT
- The Gallery at Kentuck presents Best
of Show featuring artist Yvonne Wells from June 2
through June 30, 2005.
Opening reception for the exhibit will be held June
2 from 5 to 9 pm. Wells is the 2004 Kentuck Festival of
the Arts Best of Show award winner and has been an
exhibiting artist since the 1980’s.
Yvonne
Wells, a renowned quilt maker from Tuscaloosa, AL started
making quilts in 1979.
Wells is perhaps best known for her pictorial
quilts that express narratives of personal and political
significance. Each piece is hand sewn using long, free
stitches incorporating a variety of materials, vivid
colors, and textures to give form to her artistic vision.
“Each
quilt, regardless of whether it is a story quilt or
traditional quilt has art in it. When people give you a
quilt, they're giving you a piece of themselves"
Wells states.
“I'm
not familiar with any quilting terminology or any of those
kinds of things, because it didn't interest me, because it
was just so regimented. I wanted to be free flowing, so
therefore, I didn't harbor on the traditional quilting
styles, their colors, their anything. I wanted to be my
own person.” Wells was awarded the Alabama Arts and
Visual Craftsman Award in 1998.
A
special reception and opportunity to meet Wells will be
held in conjunction with Art Night, June 2 from 5 to 9
p.m. Tuscaloosa
potter Daniel Livingston will demonstrate a Raku pottery
pit firing in the courtyard. Raku is an ancient form of
pottery meaning “freedom of expression”.
Kentuck
studio artists also host their monthly Open Studios for
visitors to see works in progress, meet the artists and
see the actual work spaces where the artists apply
materials, design, technique and equipment to the creative
process. Art Night is free and open to the public. Kentuck
Gallery Shop is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
