from earth to art: here for a gourd time; museum gallery exhibition recap

Kentuck is continuing a fantastic year of exhibitions with our theme From the Earth. From October 2, 2025 through November 23, 2025 we are featuring Gourd art, From Earth to Art Here for a Gourd Time. As the name suggests it is an original and entertaining exhibition featuring the works of Susan Davis and Teresa Wamble.

Susan Davis, also known as Susie Q Gourds, is an innovative artist whose captivating work merges traditional craftsmanship with imaginative design. Known for her mastery in transformating natural gourds into functional and decorative art, Susie incorporates elements such as pine needle weaving, handmade paper, wood-burned designs, and intricate beadwork into her pieces. Her art frequently reflects themes of nature and storytelling, with designs that evoke a sense of rustic elegance and cultural heritage. Susie’s work invites audiences to explore the harmony between natural materials and human creativity, further solidifying her place as a visionary in contemporary folk art.

Teresa Wamble originally from West Tennessee, continually nourished her creativity throughout her varied career, including 14 years with Disney. Beginning her artistic practice as a painter, Teresa pivoted to gourds, and combined the medium with wood burning, acrylics, waxes, ink dyes, egg dyes, and colored pencil. She says:

“Nature provides the best models to use in creating patterns. Wildflowers look simple, but actually contain complicated, interesting designs that can be used to create a multitude of interpretation...An overactive imagination finds potential gourd designs everywhere.”
