"selections from nature" by sam sullivan: teer gallery exhibition recap

Sam Sullivan's exhibition Selections from Nature will by on display in Kentuck's Teer Gallery from

May 1,2025 through June 27, 2025.

Sam Sullivan is a retired educator who resides in Berry, Alabama. Prior to retirement, the demands of work and family restricted his ability to create art. In 2018, he started creating art by cutting and trimming pine cones, then hand painting each “flower” and mounting them on recycled materials.

Sam is very particular about the materials he uses for his colorful works. He may find the materials anywhere from estate sales to walks in the woods but he says,

"I am really picky about the pine cones I use. If there are 100 pinecones I might get three of four."

The process of coating the pinecones in polyurethane and then painting them with latex paint preserves their shape and longevity.

He enjoys attending and selling his art at several festivals during the year and his work is popular among local collectors. While Sam says that there is an art to putting everything together, he considers himself more of a crafter than a traditional artist.
